"Chiaroscuro" is the Italian term for a drawing style that involves extreme gradations of tone from light to dark. When Jack applied the liquid tusches to the limestone he was working with black and gray washes on a blue/gray limestone. There is little doubt that he looked forward to seeing his drawing printed in white ink on black paper.
